Magazine Judges Focus ST Best Hot Hatch of 2012
With the estate version of the Ford Focus ST the manufacturer has done the seemingly impossible, making a vehicle that offers top-notch pace and handling with a vast amount of practicality and space. Now the hard work of the car’s designers has been recognised with an award from Top Gear magazine.
The January 2013 edition of one of Britain’s leading general interest car publications will name the Focus ST Estate as 2012’s Hot Hatch of the Year. To assess its capabilities, the Top Gear team took the Focus ST Estate to Russia. There, the test model was subjected to intensive testing on the ice-covered roads around Moscow.
As the award indicates, the Colorado Red edition of Focus ST Estate rose to the occasion admirably. As the Top Gear journalist Matthew Jones noted, even the legendarily harsh Muscovite winter could not ruin the model’s excellent balance, sharp steering and cornering ability – aided with this edition by an excellent set of winter tyres.
“This isn’t an official metric, but in mildly moist conditions it’ll corner until the passenger window gets smeared with a photographer’s face,” he joked. “The ST estate really is a car for every mood, journey and road.”
The accolade from a leading authority on motoring will only increase the already substantial enthusiasm amongst car buyers for the ST. The hot hatch version of the Focus supermini was expected to be a niche vehicle for hardcore enthusiasts. However, 1,600 ST registrations since the car went on sale in July – five percent of all Focus sales – has demonstrated the appetite for high-performance yet pragmatic small cars.
“Top Gear recognised that the ST estate delivers on practicality and performance – as well as on price”, remarked Ford Britain’s Managing Director Mark Ovenden. The Focus ST Estate is available at Peoples. Come and test drive one today.
