The Ford Focus comes with a range of engines, from the class-leading 1.0 and 1.6-litre petrol efficient EcoBoost power units with start/stop technology, developing either 99 and 123bhp, or 103, 123 and 180bhp respectively, through to the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engines generating 94, 103 or 113bhp, or 138 and 161bhp respectively.
The Mazda3 comes with a 1.6-litre petrol engine developing 103bhp and a 1.6-litre and 2.2-litre diesel unit generating 113 and 183bhp respectively.
From a fuel efficiency point of view, depending upon the powertrain unit chosen, the Ford Focus can return figures from 44 to an impressive 83mpg. The Mazda3 returns similar figures of between 38 and 66mpg.
With regard to safety, the Ford Focus is the first car to win four new safety technology Advanced Safety Rewards from EuroNCAP, which has also given the Focus a five-star safety rating. It also won the ‘Best in Class’ award in the ‘Small Family Car’ category. The Mazda3 has similarly been given a EuroNCAP five-star safety rating.
As for power measured by performance, the fastest Ford Focus, the 1.6-litre, 180bhp model will take you from 0-60mph in just under 7.9 seconds. The fastest Mazda3, the 2.2-litre 183bhp diesel takes just under 8.2 seconds on the same 0-60mph test.
